BillerudKorsnäs

BillerudKorsnäs case study Cumbria Waste GroupTHE CUSTOMER

BillerudKorsnäs is a leading provider of renewable packaging material. One of its production facilities is in Beetham, Milnthorpe, Cumbria, where it produces 45,000 tonnes of paper each year.

HOW WE HELPED

Sustainable development is one of the pillars of BillerudKorsnäs’ strategy. The company was, therefore, looking to partner with a local company which shared its passion for the environment.  From the outset the whole focus was on recycling as much waste as possible from the production facility.

Working with the company, we provided a large 40-yard skip in which to put their cardboard and plastic. This is taken to our site at Distington where we sort and separate the material. We then sell it on the recycling markets. The company receives a rebate for the waste we recycle on their behalf.

We also remove their general waste, via a wheelie bin service, with the material being taken away for sorting and separation. We then turn the material into a refuse derived fuel (RDF) which means that we now recycle or recover 98% of all the company’s waste.

WHAT THEY THINK

We have been working with Cumbria Waste Group since 2013 and have been very impressed with the service they provide. They are very responsive. Through the rebate they provide, along with their proactive approach, they are helping us to reduce our waste costs.

As a Swedish company environmental responsibility is very important to us and we were one of the first firms in the paper industry to achieve the ISO14000 environmental standard.

It is therefore good to be working with a company like Cumbria Waste Group that shares our passion to be environmentally sustainable.
