Domestic Recycling
Working Together
Legislation has been introduced to encourage recycling and more efficient use of resources. As part of this process the UK Goverment has introduced targets aimed at significantly increasing the volume of domestic waste that is recycled.
Cumbria Waste Recycling is committed to helping local authority customers meet these targets by offering cost effective and well-managed services and schemes to improve recycling rates.
Kerbside Collections
We operate a number of kerbside collection rounds collecting a variety of recyclable materials directly from households. The materials collected on each round vary but include:
- Glass
- Paper
- Card
- Plastic
- Cans
- Green Waste
We have special multi-compartment vehicles in addition to a specially developed fleet of lorries and vans.
Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRC's), Recycle Points and Bring Sites
We service a range of different sites enabling us to maximise household waste recycling across the county:
- 14 Household Waste Recycling Centres
- Additional Bring Sites and Recycle Points
To find your nearest recycling centre please visit www.recycleforcumbria.org .
Composting
The green waste collected from Household Waste Recycling Centres and from household doorstep collections is recycled into compost. The compost is then bagged or sold in bulk as a valuable soil conditioner.
The CWM Group also recycles wood: it is screened, shredded and sold back to chipboard manufacturers.
Low grade wood and artificial materials such as MDF and chipboard are burned to generate renewable electricity.
