Landfill
The CWM Group operates three landfill sites around Cumbria, as follows:
- Distington at Lillyhall, near Workington
- Hespin Wood at Rockcliffe, north of Carlisle
- Flusco at Flusco Pike, near Penrith

High Standards
Our sites are designed to the highest industry standards using a risk based approach and the construction quality of new waste cells is independently quality assured.
We have installed state of the art biological leachate treatment plants at our sites to treat leachate (the liquid effluent from the decomposition of waste) prior to disposal.
We generate electricity from gas at the sites which will provide a sustainable input to the National Grid for many years to come. We generate over 5 megawatts of electricity across our sites from renewables, which is enough to supply over 5,000 homes with all their power requirements.
Our standards of site management are widely regarded as amongst the best in the country. We make the health & safety of our customers and site staff our top priority.
Once our sites are full we carefully restore them back to land fit for grazing, healthland or woodland. Gas and leachate systems are concealed so that only the trained eye can tell that there had ever been any landfill activity.
Our Landfill, Household Waste Recycling Centres, Materials Recycling facilities, and our Hazardous and Liquid Waste facilities are complementary, and together provide businesses, local authorities and local communities with comprehensive waste management disposal facilities.
We continually monitor our activities against industry standards and Best Practice and take our responsibilities seriously.
